MEET OUR TEAM
Tammy has been affiliated with The Gymnasium for the past 15 years, the last 3 as co-owner. She brings her expertise in the group instruction of Spinning, Bodypump, Kickboxing, Surfset, and Basic Strength training. Tammy enjoys helping people make the most of their time in the gym and wants members to feel great, see results and actually enjoy working out! Tammy carries a B.S. degree ('93 Health & Fitness) and a M.P.E. ( '04 Athletic Administration) from Springfield College. Along with achieving an educational background in physical fitness, Tammy has also coached high school basketball, tennis and softball and college NCAA Division III Field Hockey & Lacrosse. Tammy currently still officiates high school field hockey and is an adjunct professor in the Physical Education Department at Castleton University. Being able to provide a positive, fun, and motivating environment for everyone is what keeps Tammy excited at The Gymnasium. “I want everyone, no matter what physical shape they are currently in, to feel comfortable coming to The Gymnasium. I want members to realize that regular physical activity can be accomplished on their own or by participating in group classes”. We are here to support your journey of fitness and help you maintain or achieve a healthy and happy life!
Rob became a member of The Gymnasium in 2005 and soon thereafter began teaching group fitness classes. Rob has years of group fitness experience that dates back to classic step aerobics, toning and basic strength classes. He has been teaching Spinning, Strength & Sweat, and Surfset with us for more than 15 years! Rob rotates into our Saturday morning schedule and teaches our 6 AM and 12:10 Spin Classes! Rob has always enjoyed group fitness classes and stays active with Yoga, mountain biking and hiking too! Rob works full time for the State of VT at the Department of Child Services.
A long time fitness enthusiast, Melissa completed her PiYo LIVE training in 2016. Yoga has been woven into her life for many years and she has blended it with her other fitness pursuits. Her fitness instructing began in 2011 with Zumba and spread into Group Active through the MOSSA Company, which incorporates cardio, strength training, and core/balance work. An injury forced her to stop teaching Zumba. However, once the injury started to heal Melissa immediately fell in love with PiYo after taking her first class. After a slow start, PiYo was instrumental in helping her get back on track, and the strength she has developed because of it continues to amaze her. Melissa states: “From running to skiing, I can feel the power of PiYo, and I now love bringing that to every participant in my classes. I take great joy in watching them grow in strength and confidence through their PiYo work, and carry that with them off the mat.”
Tammy (TL2) born and raised in Rutland, Vermont, is a Basic Strength fitness instructor at The Gymnasium. Prior to her break into the fitness world; Tammy spent 20 years as a daycare provider while also raising her two boys. Her decision to get involved in the fitness world was her passion for helping others and wanting to make a difference in other people’s lives. Tammy started her fitness lifestyle at Body Tech Nutrition where she learned a myriad of nutrition knowledge that helps her maintain her personal fitness goals and educate others. She received her certification from the International Sports and Science Association (ISSA).
Tammy is a firm believer in strength and weight training due to the high importance it has on maintaining a healthy body and mind. In addition to maintaining a healthy body and mind, Tammy also emphasizes the fact that proper strength training followed by cardio or conditioning helps you burn twice as many calories. Anybody beginning their break into a fitness lifestyle; Tammy recommends having a strong passion for yourself, and others, stay up to date with new fitness techniques and knowledge, and most importantly listen to the fitness and nutrition ideas and opinions of those around you.
Colleen joined us as a Zumba instructor shortly after we took over as new owners and we love having her weekly class on the schedule! Colleen explains moves with great detail and helps you learn how to feel your core while you dance and move to music. Colleen’s personal experience of working hard to lose weight and tone her body works well when instructing others. Colleen’s goal of 50 pound weight loss through Zumba many years ago not only toned her body but gave her a positive life style change which has enabled her to take weight off, keep it off and now teach others!

Kristen has been teaching group fitness classes since 2007! Her first certification was AFAA group fitness, Kickbox, followed by indoor Cycling then Bodypump, Bodycombat, Surfset and most recently POUND. Kristen was a former teacher (B.S. Psychology/Elementary Education) and a former preschool director. Now, Kristen is a certified Animal Behavior College Dog Trainer and is the owner of Canine Culture. Kristen combines her Early Childhood Education philosophy with dog training and has established a high quality environment for Canine learning and growth.
Kristen has been an asset to The Gymnasium’s inviting and supportive environment for the past 12 years. She is one of the motivating forces behind the gym’s success as a full service fitness center. Kristen’s own personal weight loss, coupled with her aspiring and challenging fitness classes make her a valued member of our team.
Brian joined our Gymnasium team in 2016 as a weekly Yoga instructor. Brian is a fine arts painter and wellness practitioner. In addition to teaching Yoga, he offers aromatherapy, massage and Reiki. His artwork focuses on the traditional Mandala. He offers a gentle, meditative style of Yoga which is accessible to all. Brian received his 200 hour Yoga Teacher training in 2016 from Fly Yoga School in Martha’s Vineyard.
Barb was first a member of The Gymnasium (summer 2014) before becoming a Certified Bodypump Instructor with us in June of 2016. Barb and her “Accountabilabuddy” Erika were both Member Spotlights at the Gym in 2015. Barb strives to be a fit Mom and wife and enjoys participating in our variety of classes as well as community fitness. Barb plays adult ice hockey, soccer, rugby and loves signing up for events (ie. Spartan Sprint, Local 5k’s, Triathlons, Century Ride) to keep her training! Barb has her B.S. in Athletic Training from Castleton University and her M.Ed in Education. Barb is a 6th Grade Teacher at Wells Elementary School and shares her passion for teaching the young in her day job with her enjoyment of teaching fitness with us at The Gym in the early evening or Saturday mornings!

Erika graduated with her B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from the University of Vermont in 2012. She obtained her CPA licensure in 2014 and currently works remotely from her home in Rutland for an accounting firm in South Burlington, VT. Erika took ballet classes for 15 years but never considered herself athletic in the traditional sense. Before starting to take Barre Fitness classes in 2015, she was actually intimidated to come to the gym! Erika found Barre to not only be approachable, but also challenging and fun and now Erika also regularly attends PiYO class and Bodypump and finds The Gymnasium to be a comfortable, safe and friendly environment for everyone.
Erika became certified in Barre Fitness in October of 2016 and started teaching at The Gymnasium shortly after. She loves being able to share her passion for Barre with others and hopes to be able to help others achieve their fitness goals by toning, increasing flexibility and muscle endurance in this 45 minute full body workout.
Nikki has been a member on and off at The Gymnasium for many years. She became certified in Spinning and Ballet Barre in the fall of 2016. Nikki received her B.A. in Sociology & Cultural Anthropology Minor in Studio Art from Castleton, as well as playing 2 years of ice hockey and 4 years of lacrosse at Castleton University (Tammy was her coach ☺). Received athletic scholarship to play lacrosse at Durham University in England where her team won the British National Championship and she earned her MA in Culture and Social Science. Her experience being trained by internationally renowned strength and conditioning coaches further inspired her interest in fitness and nutrition. Since she returned to the states, Nikki has continued to train athletes through coaching lacrosse. She is currently in her 3rd season as Castleton’s assistant coach. While at Castleton, Nikki earned her MA in Education and now works full-time at Rutland High School. Nikki is also a musician who began 2017 by finishing her first recording.
Nikki brings high energy, great singing, and will motivate you to be your best in her classes. You will also see her behind the desk at the gym too!
Jon has over 46 years of fitness experience, with 36 years dedicated to Martial Arts. He is a 6th degree Black Belt and is a member of the EUSA IMAA Black Belt Hall of Fame in Pittsburgh, PA. He spent many years AFAA Certified in personal trainer and is in the process of re-certifying through ACTION. Jon has trained many men and women to compete in Bikini, Figure, and Bodybuilding competitions. He also enjoys teaching Self Protection Awareness Seminars and will be scheduling those soon at The Gymnasium. Jon developed and started teaching KABOX in 1995. He describes it as a cardio Martial Arts class because it has elements of “striking” and “kicking” not found in a regular cardio kickboxing class. Core and footwork are essential elements and technique is built in. This class will work every muscle in your body! Jon spends part of his time now at The Gymnasium and spends time with his daughter Kayla and his grandson in Manchester, VT. If you have any interest in Martial Arts, Boxing, Bikini, Bodybuilding, or Self Protection Awareness training he is your go to guy and his classes are upbeat, high energy and Fun!

Joli also became a certified Bodypump Instructor after being a Gymnasium member since 2011. In August 2015 she joined our staff and loves teaching Bodypump! Joli at one point lost 75 lbs and strives every day to maintain a healthy active lifestyle. Joli often attends a variety of classes and she is the one in the room giving a motivating cheer, a shout or she might be singing to some classic rock and roll! She leads a great Bodypump class and makes it Fun too!
Joli is currently a Special Education Teacher at Mill River Union High School in Clarendon, VT. She has her B.S. from College of Saint Josephs with a dual teaching license in Elementary Education and Special Education K-12.
Allison was first a member of The Gymnasium (1999). She started coming to The Gymnasium due to its convenient location in downtown Rutland. Allison has always been involved in fitness activities, running, biking, hiking, swimming and participating in group exercise classes. In 2012 she became certified to teach Bodypump and became part of the gym crew. In July of 2015 Allison became certified in Surfset and most recently Allison became a Hot Pilates trainer.
Allison carries a B.S. in Criminal Justice and an M.Ed in Elementary Education. She worked for many years at Rutland Mental Health and then as a Parole Officer for the State before retiring in 2015 to run The Gymnasium with Tammy. Allison is always working on her personal fitness goals and enjoys helping others work on being their best and improving their overall fitness. She works very hard and wants everyone to know that “they can too”! Allison will push and challenge you to do better in any class she leads and sets that example in all that she does.
Kelly was a member of The Gymnasium in 2002 for many years and became Group Fitness Certified in 2013 through Pyramid Fitness. She has been teaching a variety of classes ever since. Kelly is Spinning and Group Fitness Certified. She teaches Spinning at The Pyramid and now Wednesday nights at The Gym.
Kelly strives to participate in a group fitness class daily to maintain overall health and fitness. Kelly wants to motivate and inspire others to be physically active daily. Kelly talks about the mental as well as the physical benefits she receives from fitness classes. She also rewards herself by putting aside $1 per class she takes or teaches into an envelope and treating herself to something special at the end of the year! Her 2016 total…..$347!!!!!
Kayla grew up in “Fitness”! Her Mom was an aerobics instructor and her Dad (Jon) has been a fitness professional over 40 years and owned a gym in Manchester, VT for many years. Kayla was a “weight” in classes as a child and remembers being passed around the class, HA. She began teaching KABOX with her Dad at age 14. She loves teaching group classes and in addition to being in our Sunday Cardio Class rotation she teaches on site at several corporations in Manchester.
Kayla resides in Manchester with her son Parker and is working on completing her personal training certification. She teaches KABOX, Body toning, Core and Kettlebell classes.

Mary Ann has been part of The Gymnasium for almost 20 years! She currently sub teaches Spinning classes but has often been part of the schedule on a regular basis!
Mary Ann also is very experienced in strength training and helps sub teach our Basic Strength Class or has been a regular participant.
Mary Ann Teaches:
Zac has been part of The Gymnasium Team for over five years now. He first was a member working out and soon joined the desk staff. Zac worked many hours with us while earning his degree from Castleton University. In February of 2015 he became Spin Certified and subs classes for us now and rotates into our Saturday Spin instructor rotation.
Zac currently works full time for Davis & Hodgdon Associates as an associate accountant in Rutland, VT. Zac continues to work on his personal fitness by participating in a variety of our fitness classes, hiking, lifting, and circuit training!
Molly began teaching Spinning at the Gymnasium, originally as a substitute, in 2013. Since then she has received her FIT Tour certification and currently teaches a monthly class Saturday morning in our Spin rotation. She loves the outdoors and enjoys running, cross country skiing, biking and walking. Molly enjoys new challenges, and is planning on competing in her first triathlon sprint this summer. She says her swimming needs work!
Molly is currently a Spanish teacher at Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon, VT. She has her B.A. from UVM in English and her M.A. from Middlebury College in Spanish. She is proud to be part of the Gymnasium team, and appreciates all of the support The Gym has given her over the years. She hopes to see you at a SPIN class soon!
Ally is an enthusiastic personal trainer who prides her experience from the Military where she worked with Marines and their families. Ally is experienced in functional fitness, Kettlebell training, small group training and high intensity interval training. Ally completed her NASM Certified Personal Trainer course in 2015 and now enjoys educating her clients through her various training techniques and watching them excel outside of their comfort zone. Ally also teaches our Basic Strength Training class every other Thursday at The Gymnasium and consistently challenges members to be their best. She works with a variety of clients to improve athletic performance, lose weight, and build strength and endurance.

Josh has been a Fitness Professional and Personal Trainer locally for over 11 years now with 26 years of weight training experience! Josh completed his B.S. degree from Castleton University in 2004 in Exercise Science with a minor in Health Education. Josh enjoys working with a wide variety of individuals to help improve their strength, flexibility, and overall fitness.
Josh can help improve athletic performance, help individuals recover from injury, or help anyone get back into their best shape. He will teach you great technique and support you to reach your goals!

Mary Jo has been a member of the Gymnasium for over 16 years and an employee for the past nine years. At The Gymnasium, Mary Jo’s primary job is to work the front desk, show potential members around the facility, and help orient new and existing members to equipment. Along with making wellness part of her daily routine Mary Jo’s past experience as an educator has enabled her to present herself in a professional manner while maintaining a friendly welcoming environment. The Gymnasium’s atmosphere, dedication to wellness, and general sense of community among the owners and staff are what she enjoys most. Mary Jo knows and visits with all members and makes us all smile every day!

Adam has been with The Gymnasium since early 2016 and continues to promote a welcoming environment from immediately when you walk in the door until you leave. He is a young aspiring bodybuilder with answers to any questions you may have while at the facility. He has lots of knowledge in strength training, nutrition, and how to implement them to reach your physique and health goals. He is always there for anyone if you need a spot on your bench press or help starting an elliptical, just come by the front desk and ask.

Bill is instrumental to the ongoing success of The Gymnasium. He fixes and repairs equipment and performs regular maintenance on every working part. He also maintains our grounds outside the gym and our new parking lot. You will see him mowing, picking up trash, plowing, painting, changing the cables or tuning up a spin bike, you name it. He keeps everything in tip top condition. Bill is wife of owner Allison Dydo, they live in Middleton Springs, VT. Bill is an avid cyclist, hiker, and also uses our equipment to stay in excellent shape.
Bill is the maintenance person of the gymnasium.
Marnie has been with the Gymnasium since April of 2017. Raised in Sandy Hook, CT, she moved to Denver in 2010 to explore the Rocky Mountains and finish her Degree in Photography at The Art Institute of Colorado. During college, her love of animals led her to dog grooming. After graduation, she joined a gym to get in shape. She fell in love with group fitness classes, and soon discovered yoga. Marnie was hooked! She completed her Yoga Teacher Training at Heritage Yoga School in February of 2014 as an RYT-200 and began teaching immediately. Denver was amazing, but she missed the lakes and thick woods of New England. She moved back to CT in 2015 to teach yoga, groom dogs, and teach wilderness education. Soon after, the Green Mountain State was calling, and she knew it was the place for her the second she walked up the Gymnasium stairs… she was home! Marnie is outgoing, enthusiastic about most things, tends to wear lots of color, loves a good hike, camping, kayaking, weight training, kickboxing, and of course, yoga. Helping others release tension in the body and mind while building strength, balance, and flexibility is something she is very passionate about. Marnie teaches Yoga and Barre classes, and works the front desk.
